What should I expect during teeth cleaning at Jefferson Valley Dental Associates?
Many people don’t know what the exact process is behind teeth cleaning. This unknown can add a lot of anxiety to someone to the point where they will skip teeth cleaning. Don’t let fear of the known prevent you from getting good dental hygiene. Dental cleanings are easy at our facility!
Step 1 – Oral Examination
Much like a mechanic inspecting a car, our dentist will assess the current health of your mouth. They will use a mirror to look at your teeth from every angle to look for any concerns. Our doctors know to look for the tell-tale signs of dental health problems. These can include:
- Patches, sore, or lumps – These symptoms can indicate possible oral cancer. We will assess them for tenderness and may refer you to another doctor for additional testing and treatment.
- Cavities – The scourge of every visit! This common problem is something our dentists will look for. A soft area of the tooth is a classic sign of a cavity.
- Bite Problems – We will look for signs of problems with your bite or jaw. We’ll look for damage to your teeth from grinding. We will also check to make sure your bite is aligning correctly.
- Gum Disease – Poor gum spacing can indicate possible gum disease. We will measure the space between your gums and teeth to see if there is a problem.
Part 2 – Teeth Scaling
Brushing and flossing helps eliminate plaque that forms on your teeth. However, if plaque remains on your teeth for a long time, it will harden. When it hardens, it forms tartar which must be removed through scaling that takes place during your teeth cleaning.
To remove the tartar, our dentist will use a scaler to scrape it off. If done this way, you will hear scraping sounds that may alarm you but are a regular part of the process. You can stop us anytime and ask questions if you are concerned about any sounds or sensations during the process. We will use water to wash off the tartar.
Part 3 – Scrubbing and Polishing
When scaling (if needed) is finished and the tartar is removed, our dentist will use an electric brush and abrasive toothpaste to smooth out your teeth, wiping away any remaining tartar. It will also remove minor enamel stains. A smooth tooth will attract less plaque and oral bacteria. Abrasive polishing is only recommended at our office. If done regularly at home, it can wear out your teeth quickly.
Part 4 – Fluoride Treatment
Your teeth cleaning treatment will generally end with a fluoride treatment. This will combat bacteria and help fight them off for several months after your visit. During the process, a mouthpiece will be filled with fluoride gel or paste. It will then be placed in your mouth for about sixty seconds. You may also have a choice to have a fluoride varnish to be painted onto your teeth. This varnish will harden when it makes contact with saliva.
